East Mountain School Academic ProgramSmaller class sizes yield big results.Students at East Mountain School represent grades 7-12. Our academic program instruction is structured and organized to be in compliance and consistent with the new Academic World Class and New Jersey Department of Education Curriculum Standards, and our curriculum has been re-structured to meet the new New Jersey high school graduation requirements implemented in 2010. Students benefit from an intimate learning environment, with a small average class size of 8 students, and with a teacher and teacher-aide in every classroom.![]() Departmentalized Classes:Students change classes within a four-member teaching team consisting of a Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and English Teacher.Self-Contained Junior/Senior High School Programs:Specialized small group academic programming available for students who require this type of setting.Core Content Area Subjects:Language Arts/English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies/ History, Physical Education/Health. All classes meet the requirements of the New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards.A more challenging academic program is available for students who can meet and succeed within a more rigorous curriculum. The school's academic program has strong correlations with the use and application of technology into the curriculum. A 21st Century Science/Mathematics Lab has been developed that utilizes technology and streaming media to augment instruction. Students participate in Virtual Biology and Chemistry Science Instruction with technology used as a teaching/learning tool. This technology is also being integrated into other content area subjects. Technology-based Projects LabEast Mountain School has also developed a "Technology-based Projects Lab" with a certified Technology Teacher overseeing the program. Students engage in specialized projects that include; Robotics and Synergistic's Projects that focus on a specific science/mathematics academic strand. As examples, these strands include weather exploration, vehicles and planes, rocketry, and buildings and structures to name a few of the project areas available. Students have an opportunity to create and build content based projects that support the State’s academic high school standards.Elective subjects:Elective subjects offered include Art, Computers, Instrumental Music, Law, Spanish, Robotics, Technology Projects and Sports Fundamentals.Life Skills and Transition Programs:Life Skills and Transition Programs help students obtain the necessary school to work experiences. A certified guidance counselor works with students on school-to-work transition services which include preparation for the world of work and/or facilitation of higher education activities.Challenger Science Programs:EMS has worked with the Challenger Science Program and has integrated streaming media science programs into the curriculum. Students get the opportunity to interact with “mission control” to solve science and math-based problems that strongly tie into the core curriculum standards.Financial Literacy and Business Math:Financial Literacy and Business Math meets 21st Century Learning Standards. Students are provided with instruction with key financial skills in learning to become functional and financially literate adults in our society.![]()
